I bought 2 of the 5 revisions of Mr. Schumann's book because it was the best of all the reference books I tried.
I was looking for one that was a thorough, but quick guide to gemstones and this one met all my criteria. This book is a printing disaster! All the photographs are too dark, and the colors in some have been enhanced until they are not even the true colors of the stones!
Whomever contrated with this printing company needs to send all these books back to them, and get their money back! A ruination of an excellent resource book! This book is certainly excellent with regards to the breadth of minerals covered. For that alone it earns a couple of stars. But the text is poorly written and the pictures are atrocious. But seriously, whoever was responsible for digitizing these photos should be fired. Most of the photos are so dark and grainy that they appear to have been taken with a 90s camera phone by a hyperactive, jumping 5th grader.
There are better, free resources online if you would like an encyclopedic database of the different minerals. If you're looking for a well written book with beautiful photos, there are much better books out there. Secrets of the Gem Trade, while more expensive, is certainly worth the money as an introductory text with descriptive photos, while any of the books by Yavorskyy would be better if you're looking for a coffee-table style photo book.
This book was excellent in the 80s, but it's long been outdated, and the "Revised Editions" are not really revised at all. A little sciency and not as easy to follow as I was hoping. I found this book to be very helpful. I use it to help me understand and determine the value and marketability of the jewelry I import for sale, especially the section on the "new" gems currently on the market today.
The author gives a history of gemstones, how they are mined or manufactured, where they fit in the mineral world, and what tests need to be done to determine whether they are genuine. This was a supplemental text for my class Geology of Gemstones. I should have bought it sooner. This book is crammed full of great information and will make a huge difference in the quality of my work and test results! I have a test in a week ;.
