IN Francis Crick changed the face of science. Since then molecular biology has piled advance upon spectacular advance, and we now stand on the threshold of an age of genetic engineering. Crick and Watson made a good team. Where the American Watson was an ambitious young career-scientist, Crick was an ideas man. A physicist who strayed into biology, he had been a young boffin during the war.

The Astonishing Hypothesis is a book by scientist Francis Crick about consciousness. Crick, one of the co-discoverers of the molecular structure of DNA , later became a theorist for neurobiology and the study of the brain. The Astonishing Hypothesis is mostly concerned with establishing a basis for scientific study of consciousness; however, Crick places the study of consciousness within a larger social context. Human consciousness according to Crick is central to human existence and so scientists find themselves approaching topics traditionally left to philosophy and religion.
