At Oracle, Kyte works with the Oracle database, and more specifically, he helps clients who are using the Oracle database and works directly with them specifying and building their systems or rebuilding and tuning them. Prior to working at Oracle, Kyte was a systems integrator who built large-scale, heterogeneous databases and applications for military and government clients.
Tom Kyte is the same "Ask Tom" whose column appears in Oracle Magazine, where he answers questions about the Oracle database and tools that developers and database administrators struggle with every day. Hervorragend finde ich, dass es zu den Thesen eine Reihe von Beispielen gibt. Translate review to English. Etant non DBA, ce livre m'a permis de comprendre certains principe de fonctionnement d'oracle.
This book attempts to cover dozens of subjects, and as such is 1, pages in length! Each subject contains gems of insight that had escaped me for some years now.
Read a chapter a day and really think about what Tom is saying. If you are really going to write industrial-strength code then you need this book, as Oracle Documentation and Oracle-Press books I own several tend to be quite shallow and omit explanations that Tom includes. If there is a downside, it is that only a few pages are dedicated to any one subject, meaning that while there are many gems, this is not a book to learn the basics from and it does not cover any one subject completely.
But then again, I have not seen an Oracle book that does. I wish Tom would write an entire series of books of this quality; I would buy it in a heart-beat!
Make sure that you get the version of this book from "APress", as I purchased one from the "New and Used" and got stuck with the version from "Oracle Press".
Apparently Amazon does not require such disclosure. This book belongs on every developer, team leader, or DBAs desk that works with Oracle. Kyte has written a masterpiece in advanced Oracle knowledge. He does three things very well in this book: tells you what is important in Oracle, why it is important, and what happens if you do things the wrong way. Kyte starts out giving the foundations for Oracle databases, the architecture, locking schemes, and table and index considerations.
He gives a good treatment of the types of tables and indexes that Oracle offers including the appropriate times to use them and the trade-offs to weigh. Another key topic that he covers is redo and rollback. These features are handled in a unique way in Oracle, and a lack of understanding can lead to inefficient and incorrect databases and applications. Armed with the foundations, Kyte then takes the reader through performance tuning and optimizing databases.
The best advice in this section is that performance cannot be thrown in at the end. The design decisions for a database will determine how it performs and scales. The size of the book can be intimidating at first glance, but it is pleasant to read. Kyte uses a conversational style rather than a lecturing delivery.
This book has a lot to offer, and you won't find yourself tired after reading it. Load more international reviews. His web site is a terrific alternative source of information about Oracle.
He also publishes the "Ask Tom" column in Oracle Magazine. Tom Kyte's book is simply awesome. Every time I read another chunk of it, I learn something new. His depth and breadth of understanding is amazing. If you think you are an Oracle expert, buy the book. You'll be amazed at how much more Tom can teach you. His troubleshooting is really good too.
He seems to know all of the places where people encounter problems with specific features, and includes great troubleshooting information where appropriate. If you're hesitant to buy the book because it doesn't have "9i" stamped on it, buy it anyway!
Believe me, you won't regret it! Remember: 9i is a superset of 8i, and a good understanding of 8i functionality will help you understand most of 9i too. I also had the privilege of meeting Tom in person, during an Oracle 9iR2 presentation. He is a very generous with his time, but also perpetually busy answering questions on his web site he was connected with a laptop and cell phone before he started the presentation.
I asked him about the time it took to write the book, and he acknowledged that it took a major chunk out of his life. Be thankful that there is a person as knowledgable as Tom who is so willing to help the rest of us get up to speed!! I have the previously published one, but I believe the book is substantially unchanged between publications. I just counted, I have 14 Oracle books that I have purchased, plus a whole bookshelf of 3-ring notebooks full of printed Oracle Documentation. Expert One-on-One is the first book I reach for no matter what the subject.
It's full of detailed explanations and examples. The best thing about Tom Kyte's writing is that his examples work! Plus he tells it like it is. The rest of the book is for us hands-on folks Kyte's real world experience and reliance on solid examples instead of folklore makes this light-years ahead of any other Oracle book; it's the only Oracle book I re-read regularly. If you can afford only one Oracle book, this is it. And you may not need any other. This book is fun to read! If there were a Pulitzer Prize for technical writing, it would go to Tom.
I've read his advice for years. Not only does he give the best solutions, he is probably the kindest person on the web. There is no question too dumb. He consistently shows an uncommonly high amount of respect for the people he helps. Thick Oracle book which is intended for developers who might need to understand the Oracle internals and administration parts besides writing SQL.
It's useful for them working in other database also as the general database concept is simlar. Another 5 star review. I've used this book time and time again. Outstanding advice, a must-read before doing anything with Oracle.

Second Edition of "Expert One on One Oracle"
It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Thomas Kyte has a simple philosophy: You can treat Oracle as a black box and shove data inside of it, or you can learn how Oracle works and exploit it as a powerful computing environment. If you choose the latter, you will see there are few information management problems you cannot solve quickly and elegantly. Kyte has selected the most important features and techniques to discuss in Expert One-on-One Oracle, which he teaches in a proof-by-example manner. He discusses available features, implementing software using these features, and avoiding potential pitfalls.
