Chatterton French author Alfred de Vigny wrote the play Chatterton in The drama is about Thomas Chatterton who was a British poet who also made a substantial living forging poems and claiming that they were from the medieval period of history. Instead of an earnest biography or an attempt to relate history in a realistic manner, de Vigny's Chatterton tells the tale of Chatterton through the style of French Romanticism. Specifically, the play functions as a thesis for all French Romantics who believed themselves as artistic martyrs who were willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of their art.

Alfred De Vigny's Play 'Chatterton': An Analysis
Chatterton is a dramma lirico or opera in three acts four acts in its original version by Ruggero Leoncavallo. The libretto was written by the composer himself and is freely adapted from the life of the young English poet from Bristol , Thomas Chatterton — Although composed in , it premiered 20 years later on 10 March , at the Teatro Drammatico Nazionale in Rome. Considered by the romantics as the perfect archetype of the accursed poet, Chatterton became famous for his brilliant pastiches of medieval poetry, which he attributed to an imaginary 15th-century monk whom he called Thomas Rowley. At the age of 18, to escape his misery, he committed suicide in London by taking poison.
