For instance, the voice of the melody grows by one note in each bar and, reaching its maximum eight notes begins to diminish again. The free-flowing melody is united throughout the piece with the so-called tintinnabuli voice, always following its nearest triad. These two voices are united into an inseparable whole. Interestingly, the compos….

Two stark instrumental works from the master of holy minimalism repeat each other, each time slightly different. But the blissful results--quiet, haunting, and thoroughly hypnotizing--meld to create one of classical music's best albums of It's as intense and sublime as contemporary classical music can be.
This is a remarkable release, both for its beauty and its novelty at programming. There are minute variations in tempo, emphasis, and rubato from one to the other, but, all that being said, it amounts to 22 minutes of the most beautiful, contemplative music ever performed. Almost equally gentle is Spiegel im Spiegel , played as tracks 1, 3 and 5 and scored for piano and, respectively, violin, cello, and then violin again. The instruments mirror one another Spiegel is German for mirror , with notes added to the scale with each repetition, and so on.
Almost impossible to describe in its loveliness, each of the three sets is beautiful; the cello in track 3 gives it extra mellowness. This is music staggering in its simple complexity and a treat for the ear and heart. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? Verified Purchase. Three renditions of "Spiegel im Spiegel" which is one of the most reflective and mind-centering pieces of music ever written. That said, the ECM recording, although of very high quality, was made at a very low volume.
To enjoy the pieces, you would have to turn your CD player volume up beyond any normal disc. If you download the Amazon mp3 version, the volume is equally low, such that if you add the tracks to a playlist with other mp3's, you will be adjusting the volume up followed by your other tracks being much too loud.
To solve this problem, I personally used sound editing software to triple the amplification. The end result is still clean and beautiful. But not everyone may have access to audio editing software. I imagine the tracklist looks really repetitive, but I didn't even realize until I had the CD for a while that it was the same music! This is a unique, wonderful album.
I can't recall now which piece it was -- it was simply 'the wrong piece at the wrong place and the wrong time' to paraphrase a recently topical saying. So much beauty to be found -- and right under my nose! I've since acquired several CDs of his work -- both instrumental and vocal music -- and each and every one has touched me on the deepest level.
Being a performing musician albeit in a much less demanding genre , I can easily imagine what a daunting task this recording was for the musicians involved -- and being an appreciative listener, I can also imagine how rewarding and challenging it must have been for them to take on this project.
The results are stunning in their beauty and power -- and breathtaking in their depth. The program on this CD is masterfully assembled -- I'm guessing that the credit for this aspect in particular should be given to the recording producer, ECM founder Manfred Eicher.
Only those who possess the patience to give themselves up completely to the process will reap the benefits afforded by these works. I came away from my first listening of this CD with the feeling that I had been touched by something very special and rare -- and that feeling returns each time I allow the music to wash over me. The performers on this CD Vladimir Spivakov, violin; Sergej Bezrodny, piano; Alexander Malter, piano; and Dietmar Schwalke, violoncello gently pour their souls into their interpretations of these works.
Play this recording when you have the time to wait for each note to fade -- after the ripples of the last one have been stilled, you'll still feel it resonating within you. Highest recommendation. I could listen to this man's music until I die! His use of space, the complexity of his simplicity, is overwhelming! One person found this helpful. Much of Part's music evokes great tranquility. This cd is no exception. But it also evokes a great intimacy.
This review will be in fragments, as this is how thoughts come to me when listening to this remarkable CD. As I type this, I am listening to it on my iPod, where you can hear the breathing of the musicians, the gentle scratch of the bow on the strings. It is an intimate experience. The deeply impactful movie "Wit" uses parts of Mirror in Mirror in the soundtrack, and that was our introduction to this music. The search ensued, the CD purchased, and it is one of the gems in our large music collection.

It can be considered as an essential work of his tintinnabuli style. This concert was the first to introduce his new signature style of composition, referred to as the tintinnabuli style. The family had broken up and the daughter went to England with her father. The work, dedicated to the daughter, was actually meant as a work of consolation for the girl's mother, missing her child. Its introspection calls to mind a vivid image of youth, off to explore the world. The piece appears very simple on the page. It is in the key of B minor and is played piano p.
